Travel Bans: Repression Without Trial

Egyptian authorities use travel bans as a tool to punish political opponents and human rights defenders, often placing individuals on no-travel lists without clear legal grounds or judicial rulings.

The report reveals that hundreds of activists, journalists, and lawyers have been barred from leaving Egypt without prior notice. Many are stopped at airports, detained for hours, and then forced to return home without being given any legal justification.

In some cases, travel bans are accompanied by asset freezes, effectively serving as an unlawful punishment designed to restrict individuals’ freedom of movement and ability to work.

According to the Egyptian Constitution and international law, freedom of movement is a fundamental right that may only be restricted through a fair judicial ruling—not by arbitrary security decisions.

Arbitrary travel bans must be lifted, and all citizens’ right to free movement must be upheld. The security lists used to punish dissenters without legal process should be abolished.
