Torture in Detention Facilities: A Tool for Forced Confessions

Torture in detention facilities is a systematic practice in Egypt, used to extract coerced confessions or punish political detainees. The report documents cases of systematic torture, including electric shocks, severe beatings, suspension in painful positions, and deprivation of sleep and food.

Detainees are forced to sign false confessions, which are later used as primary evidence in military trials and terrorism cases, making justice impossible to achieve.

Although torture is criminalized under the Egyptian Constitution and international conventions, authorities refuse to investigate torture allegations and protect those responsible from accountability.

Independent and transparent investigations must be conducted into all torture allegations, those responsible must be held accountable, and confessions obtained under torture must be prohibited from being used in trials.
