Enforced Disappearance: Detention Outside the Law

Enforced Disappearance: Detention Outside the Law

The report reveals that enforced disappearance has become a primary tool for suppressing political opponents in Egypt. Individuals are detained in undisclosed locations for weeks or months, with no contact allowed with their families or lawyers.

During their disappearance, detainees are subjected to torture and ill-treatment to coerce false confessions before being reintegrated into the judicial system with fabricated charges, often before military courts.

This practice constitutes a blatant violation of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance—a treaty that Egypt has refused to ratify despite repeated international recommendations.

The policy of enforced disappearance must be immediately halted, all disappeared persons must be released, and security agencies must be compelled to disclose the locations of secret detention sites. Those responsible for these crimes must be held accountable.
