With the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms’ (ECRF) membership, international, African and Arab NGOs have launched the COP27 Coalition to achieve climate justice through taking effective actions to address root causes of climate crisis and other injustices.
The COP27 Coalition called on all parties responsible for organising the COP27 to take public actions for climate justice.
The coalition invited civil society from all over the world to take part to end environmental, and other forms of, injustices. It also called on governments and international leaders to take urgent actions regarding climate change and the crises it causes.
The COP27 Coalition was launched on 15 Sep. 2022 and ECRF is an active member of it.
The coalition called on civil society to organise People’s Forums wherever they are, throughout the duration of the COP27, to organise collective action and demand effective action by leaders and governments.
The coalition demands a ‘reset’ of the multilateral system to address the scale of the challenge, as part of a wider agenda to address climate change. To achieve climate justice, the groups are calling for efforts to decolonise the economy and development and for developing countries to reframe and implement alternative models of development.
The consortium stresses on the importance of enabling a just transition to 100% renewable energy through an equitable phase out of fossil fuels to achieve climate justice. It also calls on prioritising public health, food sovereignty, agroecology, decent living conditions, restoring nature, and defending the rights of Mother Earth to achieve this goal.
The COP27 (the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference) is to be held 6-18 Nov. 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt with the participation of governments, civil society, and parties from all over the world.
