After 3 months of their imprisonment, 4 Afghan citizens resettled in Canada after demand by the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms

.

Four Afghan citizens arrived in Canada as part of resettlement procedures with their 16 member families, after 3 months of detention, in response to the demands of the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms.

It is noteworthy that the four citizens work as employees of the Afghan embassy in Cairo and hold Afghan citizenship.

All of them are registered with the United Nations and have residence and passports for themselves and their families.

The four employees were arrested on July 9, 2023, after the embassy’s political officer filed a complaint against them to the Afghan embassy, accusing them of physically and verbally assaulting him, as well as violating administrative orders and instructions.

In his communication, which carried No. 5625 of 2023 Administrative Heliopolis, the official mentioned their four phone numbers and addresses to the police, while they were arrested, presented to the Public Prosecution and charged with insult and slander.

For its part, the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms intervened to provide legal support to the staff and asked UNHCR to provide them with protection and work to resettle them and their families as well.

During their detention in Heliopolis police station, they complained about the place of detention and that the situation was difficult, in addition to the fact that the department refused to grant them visits, and treated the wife of one of them badly and refused her entry.

Although they were released by a decision of the prosecution on the evening of July 10, they remained detained for a period of time pending a signal from the National Security and the Immigration Department, despite having valid passports.

The Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms calls on the Egyptian state to respect the conventions, the constitution, international refugee rights law and the Geneva Convention by refraining from deporting or detaining refugees in Egypt in any way.
