“The Road to the Gallows”: “Stop the Death Penalty” Campaign Releases Its 2023 Report on Execution Cases
The “Stop the Death Penalty in Egypt” campaign has published its monitoring report titled “The Road to the Gallows: A Descriptive Statistical Report on Execution Cases from January to December 2023.”
The report provides a descriptive analysis of data and statistics related to criminal court rulings that issued death sentences by hanging during the period from January 2023 to December 2023.
The research methodology used by the campaign’s team for collecting, refining, and verifying the information relied on three primary sources:
1.Media and press coverage of news related to criminal cases.
2.Periodic monitoring of public sessions in various criminal courts across several Egyptian governorates.
3.Direct follow-up with defense lawyers involved in such cases, as well as the families of some of those sentenced to the harshest penalty within the criminal justice system.
The statistical report documented 454 death penalty rulings issued across various stages of trials in criminal cases during 2023.
Among these, 124 individuals had their case files referred to the Grand Mufti of Egypt for consultation. Meanwhile, 297 individuals faced death sentences issued by primary criminal courts, and 25 death penalty rulings were upheld by the Criminal Circuits of the Court of Cassation. Additionally, researchers documented 8 executions carried out during 2023.
The report examines and analyzes several key aspects of the recorded data, including the nature of the crimes that led to the death penalty, the motives behind premeditated murders, and the geographical distribution of death penalty rulings. Furthermore, it includes an analysis of select case files.
